Dropbox Transfer alternative: Transfr vs Dropbox Transfer

A Dropbox Transfer alternative is worth a look if you are on the free Basic plan: as of October 2026, Dropbox caps Basic transfers at 2 GB, which is also the whole Basic storage, with links lasting 7 days. Transfr sends up to 100 GB per transfer for free, without any account, with a password and optional end-to-end encryption.

Dropbox’s help center says transfers on Basic, Plus and Family expire after a fixed 7 days, and that Standard, Professional, Essentials, Business, Advanced, Business Plus and Enterprise customers can extend expiry up to one year and add a password. Download notifications are off by default and can be turned on per transfer. Several paid plans can add a background or logo to the transfer page.

Why Basic users look for a Dropbox Transfer alternative

  • 2 GB is small for media. A few minutes of 4K video, or a single photo shoot in RAW, already passes it.
  • Storage and sending are linked. With 2 GB of total Basic storage, a big transfer competes with the files you sync.
  • You need a Dropbox account to send. Fine if you already use Dropbox, one more sign-up if you don’t.
  • Security options are on paid plans. Passwords and longer expiry come with business tiers.

When Dropbox Transfer is the better choice

  • Your files already live in Dropbox. Sending a copy from a synced folder saves re-uploading.
  • You are on a business plan. 100 GB to 250 GB transfers, one-year expiry and passwords are included in what you pay.
  • Your team is standardised on Dropbox for storage, permissions and admin.
  • Links must last months. Business plans can extend expiry up to a year; Transfr Pro stops at 60 days.

When Transfr is the better choice

  • Free transfers over 2 GB. Up to 100 GB per transfer, no plan or account. See send 10 GB free.
  • No storage juggling. Transfers don’t use any cloud storage of yours; files are deleted when the link expires.
  • Password and encryption for free. Password, download limit and optional end-to-end encryption on every plan.
  • Collecting files. Free file requests, up to 100 GB per submission.
  • Feedback on deliveries. Comments pinned to video timestamps, image areas and PDF pages.
  • Unlimited size on Pro, with Send & Track analytics and your branding. See download tracking.

Switching client deliveries from Dropbox Transfer: what changes

A quick checklist before you move
Habit on Dropbox TransferEquivalent on Transfr
Send a copy of files from DropboxDrag the same files from your synced Dropbox folder, or import from Drime
Transfer page with your logo (paid plans)Pro: logo, background, subdomain or custom domain
Download notifications (turn on per transfer)Email at each download with a free account; Send & Track on Pro
Expiry extended to months (business plans)Up to 60 days on Pro; re-send if a client needs longer
Password (paid plans)Password on every plan, plus optional end-to-end encryption
Recipient feedback by emailComments directly on the files, pinned to a moment or area

The main adjustment is duration: if you rely on transfers that stay online for a year, keep those on Dropbox, or store the masters in cloud storage and use transfer links for deliveries. Everything else maps directly, and your clients don’t need to create anything to download.

What your recipient sees

A download page with the list of files and their sizes, previews for images, videos in browser-friendly formats, audio, PDFs and Office documents, and a button to download everything as one zip, folders kept, or file by file. On Pro, the page can carry your logo and background, and you can see views and downloads per file. For client deliveries, see our pages for photographers and agencies.
