How to send large files on Discord without Nitro

To send large files on Discord without Nitro, upload them to Transfr and paste the link in the channel or DM. As of October 2026, Discord accepts 20 MB per file for free accounts; a Transfr link carries up to 100 GB for free, keeps your clip at full quality, and shows a preview card with the file count and size in the chat.

  • No Nitro: up to 100 GB per transfer, free
  • Full-quality clips, no re-compression
  • Password and expiry for links posted in servers

What is Discord’s file size limit in 2026?

Discord upload limits per file, as of October 2026 (Discord File Attachments FAQ)
AccountMax upload per file
Free (no Nitro)20 MB (raised from 10 MB in August 2026)
Nitro Basic50 MB
NitroUp to 1 GB
Transfr link pasted in Discord100 GB per transfer, free

Discord’s FAQ states that the free limit went from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026. That is welcome, but still small for video. Here is how long a clip fits in 20 MB at the bitrates YouTube recommends for uploads:

Roughly how many seconds of video fit in 20 MB
RecordingTypical bitrateFits in 20 MB
1080p, 30 fps8 MbpsAbout 20 seconds
1080p, 60 fps (gameplay)12 MbpsAbout 13 seconds
1440p, 60 fps24 MbpsAbout 7 seconds
4K, 60 fps53 Mbps or moreAbout 3 seconds

Game capture tools often record at higher bitrates than these, so a one-minute highlight can easily be 100 MB to 500 MB. Even Nitro’s 1 GB fills up with a long session or raw footage, and the limit applies per file, so a full stream recording of several gigabytes never fits.

Compression is fine for a quick meme. For a highlight you want to look good, a montage for your community or footage someone will edit, the original matters. See how to send a video without losing quality and our large video files guide.

How to send large zip files on Discord

Mod packs, map files, sample libraries and game saves rarely fit in 20 MB, even zipped. Upload the zip, or the folder directly, to Transfr and paste the link. Unlike split archives, your members download one file and are done. More on archives in send a large zip file, and on folders in send a folder without zipping.

  • In a server, everyone who can read the channel can open the link. Post private files in DMs or private channels.
  • Add a password and share it only with the people who need it.
  • Set a download limit or a short expiry for one-off shares; the files are deleted when the link expires.
  • Be careful with files you download from strangers, whatever the host. Only run programs from people you trust.

Want to know who actually grabbed your release? With a free account you get an email at each download; Pro adds Send & Track with views, downloads per file and countries. See download tracking.

Collecting clips from your community

Running a clip contest, gathering raw footage for a montage, or asking your editor’s team to send their exports? Instead of asking everyone to squeeze files under 20 MB, create a file request and pin its link in the channel. Each member uploads up to 100 GB from their browser, without an account, and you get an email when something arrives. You can protect the request with a password, cap the number of submissions and close it after a set number of days. Submitted files stay available for 7 days, so download them to your drive or editing machine once the round is over.

Sending large files from the Discord mobile app

The same 20 MB limit applies on phones. Open transfr.me in your phone’s browser, add the clip from your gallery, copy the link and switch back to Discord to paste it. For phone-specific tips, see send large files from iPhone and from Android.
