Comparison

Filemail alternative: how Transfr compares with Filemail

If Filemail’s free plan keeps stopping you, the limits are usually the reason to look for a Filemail alternative: as of October 2026, Filemail Free sends 5 GB per transfer, two transfers per 24 hours, kept 7 days. Transfr Free sends up to 100 GB per transfer, as many times as you want, kept up to 7 days, and neither service needs an account to send.

The daily cap is the constraint people hit first. Two transfers a day is fine for an occasional send, but not for a photographer delivering three galleries on a Monday or a team sending revisions back and forth. Transfr has no daily or monthly count on the free plan, so the only question for each send is whether it fits in 100 GB, and on Pro not even that.

When Filemail is the better choice

  • You want a desktop app. Filemail offers apps for Windows and macOS. Transfr runs in the browser only.
  • Very long-distance transfers on a business plan. Filemail says its Business and Enterprise plans include UDP transfer acceleration in its desktop apps, designed for high-latency links.
  • Your occasional sends stay under 5 GB. Two free transfers a day can be enough.

When Transfr is the better choice

  • Several transfers a day, free. No daily count, and up to 100 GB each. See send large files for free.
  • Transfers between 5 GB and 100 GB without paying. Video edits, RAW galleries, CAD packages. See send 50 GB for free.
  • Nothing to install. Works on any computer or phone, including locked-down work machines where you can’t install apps.
  • End-to-end encryption on every plan. Files are encrypted in your browser, and the key is never stored on our servers.
  • Free file requests and comments. Collect files without an account, and let clients comment on videos, images and PDFs.
  • Storage region per transfer. Western Europe by default, or North America, Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific or Oceania.

No daily limit, 100 GB per transfer

Send as often as you need, free and without an account.

A busy week on each free plan

Example: a freelance photographer’s deliveries, on free plans

MondayThree client galleries, 4 GB eachTwo go out; the third waits until TuesdayAll three
TuesdayA 12 GB behind-the-scenes videoOver 5 GB: needs a paid plan or splittingYes
WednesdayRevised selection, 800 MBYesYes
ThursdayA 60 GB RAW archive for an agencyNeeds a paid planYes

On light weeks, Filemail Free covers the occasional delivery. On heavy ones, the daily count and the 5 GB cap add waiting or splitting, and a split delivery means several links for the client to keep track of, each expiring on its own date. More workflow tips on our photographers page.

Does a desktop app make uploads faster?

For most people, the limit is their connection’s upload speed, not the tool. A browser upload on a 50 Mbps line sends 10 GB in about 27 minutes, whatever the service. Accelerated protocols mainly help on very long-distance or lossy links, such as sending from Asia to Europe on a congested network. Transfr speeds up browser uploads in its own way: files are split into parts sent in parallel, failed parts are retried automatically, and you can choose a storage region close to you or to your recipient. Security: what to compare

Filemail says its UDP traffic is encrypted with AES-GCM, and Transfr encrypts files in transit and at rest, with optional end-to-end encryption on top. Beyond encryption, compare what protects the link itself: passwords, download limits and expiry dates. Transfr includes all three on the free plan. Our secure file transfer guide lists what else to check.
