What changed on WeTransfer’s free plan
For years, WeTransfer meant “2 GB, no account, link valid for a week”. That is no longer the deal. WeTransfer’s own pricing and plan-limits pages, checked on October 23, 2026, describe the free plan like this:
| Plan | Price | Volume | Transfers | Link expiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | €0, account required, personal non-commercial use only | 3 GB per 30 days | 10 per 30 days | Up to 3 days |
| Starter | €8 per month | 300 GB per 30 days | 10 per 30 days | Up to 3 days |
| Ultimate | €23 per month | No transfer size limit | Unlimited | No expiry |
| Teams | €19 per user per month, 2 users minimum | As Ultimate | Unlimited | As Ultimate |
The limits work on a rolling 30-day window: a transfer you sent on the 1st frees up a slot on the 1st of the next month, not at a fixed reset date. In practice, a free user who sends one 3 GB video has used the whole monthly volume. For the full breakdown, see WeTransfer limits explained and can you still use WeTransfer for free.

The 8 WeTransfer alternatives, reviewed
1. Transfr: 100 GB per transfer, free, no account
Transfr is our own service, built by the team behind Drime cloud storage, so weigh this entry accordingly; the facts below come from our pricing page. The free plan sends up to 100 GB per transfer, with unlimited transfers, no account for you or your recipient, and links that stay up for 1 to 7 days. Every transfer can carry a password, a download limit and optional end-to-end encryption, where the decryption key lives in the link and is never stored on our servers. Files are stored in Western Europe by default, and you can pick another region (US, Asia-Pacific, Oceania) per transfer.
- Good for: large one-off sends, video and photo deliveries, anyone who left WeTransfer over the 3 GB cap.
- Limits: free links last 7 days at most (SwissTransfer goes to 30); download analytics and branding are Pro features.
- Pro: €15 per month or €144 per year: unlimited size, links up to 60 days, Send & Track analytics, your logo and domain, teams of up to 10.
2. SwissTransfer: 50 GB and 30 days, hosted in Switzerland
Run by Infomaniak, SwissTransfer is free, needs no account and stores files only in Infomaniak’s Swiss data centres. It accepts 50 GB per transfer, lets you keep the link for up to 30 days and supports a password and a download cap. It is the longest free retention in this list. There is no branding or analytics, and 50 GB can be tight for raw 4K footage. Our SwissTransfer comparison goes into the details.
3. Smash: no hard size cap, priority for paying users
Smash, a French service, does not set a fixed size limit on free transfers, but its own pages say that free transfers above 2 GB are queued behind paid ones, so very large uploads can wait. Free links last up to 7 days. Smash Pro, at $10 per month or $72 per year excluding VAT, removes the size cap, keeps links up to 30 days and adds tracking and branding, according to its pricing page. Free transfers include a password but no download tracking or file reception. See Smash vs Transfr.
4. TransferNow: 5 GB free, cheap entry plan
TransferNow, also French, sends 5 GB per transfer for free with a 7-day link and no account, plus file requests to receive files. Its Starter plan (10 GB, 30 days) is listed at €3 per month on a two-year commitment and Premium (250 GB, up to 365 days) at €6 per month on the same terms. Details in TransferNow vs Transfr.
5. Filemail: 5 GB, two transfers a day
Filemail, from Norway, allows 5 GB per transfer on its free plan, limited to two transfers in 24 hours, with links valid for 7 days. Paid plans remove the daily cap and raise the size. See Filemail vs Transfr.
6. Google Drive: fine inside the Google world
Every Google account gets 15 GB of free storage, shared with Gmail and Google Photos. You upload a file and share a link; it stays until you delete it. That is handy for documents you keep editing, less so for a one-off 20 GB delivery: the upload eats your quota, and you have to set the sharing rights so an outside recipient can open it. Google also caps uploads at 750 GB per day. More in Google Drive vs a transfer service.
7. Dropbox Transfer: built into Dropbox plans
Dropbox Transfer sends a copy of files from your Dropbox with a download page. On the free Basic plan, transfers are capped at 2 GB (which is also the whole Basic storage) and links last 7 days. Plus and Family plans raise transfers to 50 GB, Essentials and Business to 100 GB. It makes sense if you already pay for Dropbox. See Dropbox Transfer alternatives.
8. Proton Drive: encrypted storage with share links
Proton Drive is end-to-end encrypted cloud storage from the makers of Proton Mail, with up to 5 GB free. Share links can carry a password and an expiry date. Like Google Drive, it is storage rather than transfer, so the free space is the ceiling, and you need a Proton account to send.
Send up to 100 GB free, no account needed
Drop your files on Transfr, get a link, done. Password and end-to-end encryption included on the free plan.
Which WeTransfer alternative fits your needs?
- Files over 10 GB, sent often: Transfr (100 GB free, no monthly cap) or SwissTransfer (50 GB). Both need no account. For a 100 GB batch, see how to send 100 GB.
- Link must stay up for weeks: SwissTransfer (30 days free) or Transfr Pro (60 days).
- Confidential documents: a service with end-to-end encryption, such as Transfr’s optional E2EE or Proton Drive. Our secure file transfer guide explains what to check.
- Data kept in Europe: Transfr stores in Western Europe by default; SwissTransfer stores in Switzerland. Read GDPR-compliant file transfer.
- Client deliveries with your logo: Transfr Pro and WeTransfer Ultimate both add your logo to transfers; check the paid plans of the others if branding matters. See branded file transfer.
- Collecting files from clients: look for file requests. Transfr, TransferNow and WeTransfer Ultimate offer them; see receive large files.
- Your team already lives in Google or Dropbox: keep using Drive or Dropbox Transfer for shared, editable files, and a transfer service for one-off heavy sends.

How we compared these services
We checked each service’s official pricing and help pages on October 23, 2026, and recorded only what they state: size per transfer, hidden caps (monthly volume, transfers per day), free link duration, whether sending needs an account, and the entry paid price. Where a service did not publish a figure, we left it out rather than estimate it. We did not rank on speed, which depends on your connection more than on the service (see why uploads are slow). Transfr publishes this page and is listed first; the table lets you compare it on the same terms as the others.
