Typical 10 GB deliveries: a corporate event filmed in 4K, a portrait session in RAW with the edited JPEGs, a podcast season’s raw recordings, or a project folder with linked assets. Video rates come from YouTube’s upload recommendations and Apple’s ProRes white paper.

How to send a 10 GB file

  1. Step 1

    Plug in, if you can

A cable is steadier than Wi-Fi for long uploads. On a laptop, plug in the charger so it does not go to sleep.

  2. Step 2

Open Transfr and add the file

Go to Transfr and drop your 10 GB file or folder. The upload starts right away, split into parts that travel in parallel.

  3. Step 3

Fill in the details while it uploads

Choose link or email (up to 10 recipients), set the expiry and, if needed, a password.

  4. Step 4

Keep the tab open until it is done

You can use other tabs and apps. When the upload completes, the link is ready and email recipients are notified.

How long does it take to upload 10 GB?

At 10 GB, upload speed starts to matter more than any service limit. Here is the theoretical time at full speed; real uploads are usually a little slower.

Theoretical upload time for 10 GB
Upload speedTypical connectionTime for 10 GB
10 MbpsBasic DSL or busy 4G2 h 13 min
20 MbpsFast DSL, average 4G1 h 7 min
50 MbpsCable, good 5G27 min
100 MbpsEntry fibre13 min
300 MbpsFibre4 min 30 s
1 GbpsSymmetric fibre1 min 20 s

Run a speed test and look at the upload figure, not the download one. Our guide to how long large uploads take explains the maths and how to speed things up.

What if the upload is interrupted?

An hour-long upload will sometimes meet a Wi-Fi drop. Transfr sends each file in parts of 32 MB for files of this size and retries any part that fails. If you go offline, the upload pauses and resumes when the connection is back. If the browser closes, open Transfr again and add the same file within six days: the parts already sent are kept and the upload continues from there.

What your recipient needs to download 10 GB

Downloading is usually faster than uploading, since most connections have more download than upload bandwidth, so the person on the other end often gets the file in a fraction of the time it took you to send it. They do need 10 GB of free space, which is worth mentioning if they will download on a phone.

Before committing to a 10 GB download, your recipient can open the link and preview the content: videos play in the browser, photos and PDFs display directly. If the transfer contains many files, they can pick only the ones they need. And if several people need the same delivery, one link works for all of them, or Transfr can email up to 10 addresses at once.

Should you compress or split a 10 GB file?

Not if the goal is to send it. Videos and photos barely shrink in a ZIP, and splitting only helps when a service has a per-file cap. With a 100 GB free limit, sending the original in one go is faster for you and simpler for the recipient. If your 10 GB is spread over many files, you do not need to zip them either: Transfr keeps folders intact. See should you zip files before sending and sending a folder.
