Smash alternative: how Transfr compares with Smash

If you want a Smash alternative, the main difference to weigh is what happens above 2 GB on the free plan. As of October 2026, Smash Free queues transfers over 2 GB behind paying users and keeps links up to 7 days; Transfr Free sends up to 100 GB per transfer without a queue, also for up to 7 days, with no account on either service.

Smash’s pricing page shows “2 GB per transfer” on the free plan card and explains that larger free transfers are processed after Pro transfers. In practice, that means a 10 GB free upload can work, but you can’t predict how long it will wait. With Transfr, a free 100 GB transfer is processed like any other.

On price alone, Smash Pro is cheaper per month for a single user. Transfr Pro includes up to 10 team members in the same subscription, unlimited storage, longer links (60 days) and a custom domain. Which costs less depends on how many people need access and how long your clients take to download.

When Smash is the better choice

  • You want the lowest price for one paid user. At $72 per year, Smash Pro costs less than Transfr Pro’s €144 per year.
  • Your team is bigger than 10. Smash Team plans go from 10 to 50 users.
  • You send from Outlook all day. Smash lists an Outlook integration on its paid plans.
  • Your transfers stay under 2 GB. Then the free queue never applies and both free plans behave similarly.

When Transfr is the better choice

  • Big free transfers on a deadline. Up to 100 GB with no queue behind paying users.
  • Confidential files. Optional end-to-end encryption on the free plan: files are encrypted in your browser, and the key is never stored on our servers. See end-to-end encrypted transfer.
  • Collecting files. Free file requests let clients upload to you without an account.
  • Feedback on deliveries. Recipients can comment on a video at a timestamp, on an image area or a PDF page.
  • Long links for slow clients. Pro keeps links up to 60 days.
  • Choosing where files are stored. Western Europe by default, or North America, Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific or Oceania.

Upload speed and reliability

Both services upload straight from your browser, so your connection’s upload speed sets the pace far more than the service does. What differs is how a long upload copes with problems. Transfr splits files into parts sent in parallel, retries automatically when the network drops, and pauses while you are offline. If you close the tab by accident, re-adding the same file resumes the upload instead of starting over (for files over 16 MB, within 6 days, except with end-to-end encryption). That matters most for the 20 GB to 100 GB transfers where a single failure costs an hour. For typical timings, see how long it takes to upload large files.

Other Smash alternatives

Smash isn’t the only option. SwissTransfer offers 50 GB free with links up to 30 days and Swiss hosting (see SwissTransfer alternative). TransferNow gives 5 GB free and cheap paid plans on long commitments (TransferNow alternative). WeTransfer now caps its free plan at 3 GB per 30 days (WeTransfer limits). Our full ranking is in WeTransfer alternatives compared.

How we compared

We read Smash’s pricing page and our own on October 23, 2026, and only list features each page states. “Not listed” means the plan page doesn’t mention the feature, not that it can’t exist elsewhere in the product. Transfr publishes this comparison; if you spot something out of date, the official pricing pages are the reference. For a broader view, see our roundup of free file transfer services.
