Send files over 2 GB for free

To send a file over 2 GB, use a transfer service whose free plan goes well beyond that mark and share the link. Transfr sends up to 100 GB per transfer for free, so a 2, 3 or 5 GB file goes through in one piece, without an account and without compression.

  • No 2 GB or 3 GB wall
  • One file or a whole folder
  • Recipient downloads in the browser

Where the 2 GB limit comes from

Two gigabytes is a round number that many services picked as their ceiling, and it has stuck. As of October 2026, these popular options stop at or just above it:

Services that cap around 2 GB, as of October 2026 (official pages)
ServiceLimitNote
WhatsApp2 GB per documentPhotos and videos sent as media are compressed
Telegram2 GB per file4 GB with Telegram Premium
Dropbox Transfer (Basic, free)2 GB per transferPaid Dropbox plans go higher
Outlook.com with OneDrive2 GB per linked fileAnd 5 GB of free OneDrive storage
Smash FreeNo set limitTransfers over 2 GB wait in a queue
WeTransfer Free3 GB per transfer10 transfers or 3 GB in total per 30 days

There is also a hardware wall a little further on: USB sticks formatted in FAT32, still the default on many, cannot hold a single file over 4 GB. Reformatting to exFAT fixes that, but it erases the stick, and the recipient still has to be in the same room.

What kind of file weighs more than 2 GB?

FileReaches 2 GB after
1080p video at 8 Mbps (YouTube’s recommendation)About 33 minutes
4K video at 45 MbpsAbout 6 minutes
4K video at 68 Mbps (60 fps)About 4 minutes
1080p ProRes 422 HQAbout 73 seconds
RAW photos at 40 to 60 MB each35 to 50 photos
Phone photos at 2 to 5 MB each400 to 1,000 photos

In practice, a wedding highlight film, a recorded webinar, an export of a phone’s camera roll or a game mod pack all land here. Video rates come from YouTube’s recommended upload bitrates and Apple’s ProRes white paper.

How to send a file larger than 2 GB

  1. Step 1

    Open Transfr on any device

Go to Transfr in your browser. No account is needed.

  2. Step 2

    Add the file or folder

Drop it on the page. Files over 16 MB are uploaded in several parts at once, which keeps big uploads fast and lets failed parts retry on their own.

  3. Step 3

    Share it

Copy the link and paste it in WhatsApp, Telegram or an email, or let Transfr email up to 10 people.

  4. Step 4

    Your recipient downloads

They open the link, can preview videos, photos and PDFs, and download the original file.

Send a large file

How long does it take to send 2 to 5 GB?

Theoretical upload time at full speed
Size10 Mbps20 Mbps50 Mbps100 Mbps300 Mbps
2 GB27 min13 min5 min2 min 40 s53 s
3 GB40 min20 min8 min4 min1 min 20 s
5 GB1 h 7 min33 min13 min6 min 40 s2 min 13 s

Upload speed is what matters, and on many home connections it is several times lower than the download speed advertised. If your upload is slow, start the transfer and leave the tab open; if Wi-Fi drops, Transfr pauses and continues by itself. See why your upload is slow.

Send a video over 2 GB through WhatsApp

WhatsApp will not take the file itself, but it happily carries a link. Upload the video to Transfr, then paste the link in the chat: your contact taps it and downloads the original, in full quality, without the compression WhatsApp applies to media. The same works for Telegram, Signal, Messenger or a text message. Step by step: send a large video on WhatsApp.

Many small files that add up to more than 2 GB

Limits are not always about one big file. Messaging apps count per file, but sending 600 photos one by one is its own problem, and some transfer services cap the total size of a transfer, not each file. On Transfr, the 100 GB free limit applies to the whole transfer and there is no maximum number of files: drop the entire folder and its subfolders come through as they are. Your recipient can then download everything at once or only the files they need. More in sending a folder without zipping.

Other ways to send more than 2 GB

  • Split the file into 2 GB parts with an archiver such as 7-Zip. It works, but the recipient needs every part and the same tool to rebuild it.
  • Compress the video to get it under 2 GB. Fine for a quick preview, but you lose quality you cannot get back.
  • Use a cloud drive. Google Drive’s 15 GB free storage can hold it, if you have room, and you then manage the sharing settings and delete it later.
  • Upgrade a messaging app. Telegram Premium goes up to 4 GB per file, which still leaves out bigger videos.

A transfer link avoids all four workarounds. If your file is much bigger, see sending a 10 GB file for free or sending large video files. For files just over the email limit, read sending files over 25 MB.
