How to send a large video on WhatsApp in full quality

To send a large video on WhatsApp without compression, send it as a document (up to 2 GB), not as a video. Above 2 GB, or when you want the original file untouched, upload it to Transfr and paste the link in the chat: free up to 100 GB, and your contact downloads it without an app or account.

  • Original quality: no re-encoding
  • Beyond WhatsApp’s 2 GB file limit, up to 100 GB free
  • Works from iPhone, Android and WhatsApp Web

Why WhatsApp videos look worse than the original

When you send a clip through the gallery button, WhatsApp re-encodes it to a smaller file so it travels fast on mobile data. Its help center says it plainly: media is usually compressed when shared, so quality can be lower than the original. The HD option keeps more detail than Standard, but it is still a compressed copy, not your file. That is why a sharp 4K clip arrives soft, with blocky dark scenes, and why a long video can be refused or trimmed.

The other limit is size. As of October 2026, WhatsApp accepts documents up to 2 GB per file. Anything bigger cannot go through WhatsApp at all, whichever button you use.

How to send a video as a document on WhatsApp (up to 2 GB)

  1. Step 1

    Open the chat

On iPhone, Android or WhatsApp on a computer, open the conversation with your contact.

  2. Step 2

    Tap the attachment button

The paperclip on Android and on the computer, the + button on iPhone. Choose Document, not Gallery or Photos & Videos.

  3. Step 3

    Pick the video file

Browse your files or gallery and select the clip. If it isn’t listed, save it to Files (iPhone) or Downloads (Android) first.

  4. Step 4

    Send

The file goes as is, with its name and size shown in the chat. Your contact taps it to open it in their video player.

Sending as a document keeps the quality, but the upload is the full size of the file: a 1.5 GB clip takes about 20 minutes on a 10 Mbps mobile upload. Use Wi-Fi if you can, and keep WhatsApp open until the bar finishes.

How to send files larger than 2 GB on WhatsApp

WhatsApp can’t carry the file, but it can carry a link to it. That is the method for long recordings, 4K or ProRes footage, folders of photos, or a zip of project files:

  1. Step 1

    Open Transfr on your phone

Go to transfr.me in Safari or Chrome. No app, no account.

  2. Step 2

    Add the video

Tap to add files from your gallery or Files. You can add several videos at once, up to 100 GB per transfer.

  3. Step 3

    Choose Link and set options

Pick how long the link stays up (1 to 7 days free), and add a password if the video is private.

  4. Step 4

Copy the link and paste it in WhatsApp

When the upload ends, copy the link and send it as a normal message. Your contact taps it, watches a preview in the browser and downloads the original.

How long does it take to send a large video?

Whatever the method, upload speed sets the pace. Mobile and home connections usually upload much slower than they download. Rough times for the full file, without overhead:

Approximate upload time by file size and upload speed
File size5 Mbps20 Mbps50 Mbps100 Mbps
500 MB13 min3 min1 min 20 s40 s
2 GB53 min13 min5 min 20 s2 min 40 s
5 GB2 h 13 min33 min13 min7 min
20 GB8 h 53 min2 h 13 min53 min27 min

With a link, you upload once and can share it in several chats or groups without re-uploading. More on speed in how long it takes to upload large files.

Send large files on WhatsApp from iPhone or Android

  • iPhone: iOS stores videos in the Photos app, and some clips are kept in iCloud. Make sure the original is downloaded to the phone before sending as a document. More tips in send large files from iPhone.
  • Android: in the document picker, open the gallery or Camera folder to find the clip. Our Android guide covers other options like Quick Share.
  • Computer: WhatsApp on Windows, Mac or the web also sends documents up to 2 GB. For bigger exports, a link from your computer is quicker than moving the file to the phone.
  • Audio files (voice memos, WAV, stems) follow the same rule: send them as documents to avoid compression, or as a link for big sessions. See send large audio files.

Is it safe to send files through WhatsApp?

WhatsApp messages and attachments are end-to-end encrypted between you and your contact. A Transfr link pasted in the chat is as private as the link itself: anyone who gets it can download until it expires. For sensitive videos, add a password and share it separately, turn on Transfr’s optional end-to-end encryption, or limit the link to one download. See secure file transfer.
