Is WeTransfer still free?
Yes, there is still a free plan, but it is no longer the “just drop a file” WeTransfer many people remember. According to WeTransfer’s free plan page and pricing page, checked on October 23, 2026, the free plan:
- requires a free account to send (recipients don’t need one);
- allows 10 transfers and up to 3 GB in total in any rolling 30 days;
- keeps links for up to 3 days;
- is meant for individual, non-commercial use;
- includes password and access controls, and up to 10 email recipients per transfer.
The details of the quota, and how the rolling window frees up space, are in WeTransfer limits explained.
Can you use WeTransfer without registration?
| Action | Account needed? |
|---|---|
| Downloading a transfer someone sent you | Not needed |
| Sending a transfer by email | Yes, a free account |
| Creating a download link | Yes, a free account |
| Changing expiry, recovering expired transfers | Paid plan (Ultimate) |
Signing up is quick (an email address, or a Google, Apple or Slack login), but it means one more account and one more sign-in to remember. If you only send big files a few times a year, or from a shared or work computer, that is exactly the friction you were trying to avoid. Old guides and videos that show WeTransfer “without registration” describe the older service.

WeTransfer still has strengths: a well-known brand that recipients trust, polished apps and integrations, and paid plans with features like selling files. If you already pay for Ultimate, its limits are generous. The comparison above is about the free tiers, and about whether you have to create an account at all.
When does a WeTransfer account make sense?
- You send small files occasionally and like having a history of past transfers in one place. Ten transfers and 3 GB a month may be enough.
- Your clients already expect WeTransfer links and you are ready to pay for Ultimate for longer links and branding.
- You need it for work but stay on Free: check the terms first, since the free plan is described as non-commercial.
Otherwise, a service that doesn’t ask for an account is simpler for one-off sends. For heavy or regular sends, compare the WeTransfer alternatives, or see how to send large files for free and send 50 GB for free.
Receiving files for free, without an account either
On WeTransfer, collecting files from other people through your own page is an Ultimate feature. With Transfr, a file request is free and needs no account: you enter your name and email, set an optional password, expiry or submission cap, and share the link or its QR code. Each person can upload up to 100 GB, and you get an email when files arrive. It is handy for photographers collecting client selections, teachers gathering assignments or anyone receiving footage from several people.
Privacy: what an account changes
An account ties your transfers to your email address and keeps a history on the provider’s side. Sending without one leaves less behind. With Transfr, you can still add a password, keep the link short-lived and turn on end-to-end encryption, where files are encrypted in your browser and the key is never stored on our servers. Files are stored in Western Europe by default. Read more in secure file transfer and GDPR-compliant file transfer.
If you later want a history, download notifications by email or Pro features like 60-day links and your own branding, you can create a free Transfr account at any time; it stays optional for sending.
